The Global LGBTQI+ Inclusive Democracy and Empowerment (GLIDE) Initiative - a partnership between Outright International, Synergía Initiative for Human Rights, and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) - is pleased to present the GLIDE 2024 Landscape Analysis. The report provides a snapshot of the status of LGBTQI+ rights and civic and democratic participation around the world, including those factors that impact the ability and willingness of LGBTQI+ people to engage in democratic and political processes.
Stemming from a comprehensive desk review, 190 online survey responses, and 45 key informant interviews with activists, experts, and academics, the landscape analysis explores key areas impacting the ability and willingness of LGBTQI+ people to engage in democratic and political processes such as protective and harmful legislation, respect for the rule of law, the impact of corruption, presence of LGBTQI+ candidates and legislators, protection of the human rights of LGBTQI+ people, and presence of and space for civil society to engage on LGBTQI+ issues. Despite the documented correlation between rising authoritarianism and crackdowns on LGBTQI+ rights and protections, the data highlights the dynamic, resilient, and vibrant LGBTQI+ individuals, activists, and organizations leveraging political, civic, and democratic processes to drive improvements in their countries and communities. The landscape analysis culminates in discussions on the needs and gaps to better support LGBTQI+ individuals, organizations, and movements in these spaces to elevate their voices and leadership as well as opportunities for future work.
IFES, Outright International, and Synergía sincerely thank all partners, stakeholders, activists, and individuals who agreed to be interviewed for this project and candidly shared their experiences and perspectives – we are grateful for their contributions and critical work around the world
